Mystics often describe their experiences as a light that enlights their inner being. It is not a surprising grace, if we consider that “God is light” and that Jesus Christ defined Himself as “the light of the world”.
The light of the Transfiguration shines in the inner being of the mystics of the Eastern Christianity, such as St Simeon “the new theologian”, or St Gregory Palamas. It also shines in the Western Christianity, as it happened to Saint Augustine of Hippo, or to Saint Hildegard of Bingen with her beautiful narrations. Another example of mystics and the light experience is Saint Teresa
of Ávila. She asked people not to feel empty inside, because deep in ourselves, in the inner mansion, “there is a Sun whence this brilliant light streams forth from the interior of the spirit to its faculties”.
All the mystics who had this experience prepared for this journey inside themselves. They prepared to let God’s light emerge and be ready to receive it. The more we let our lives be enlightened by this light, the more intense it will be in our lives. Only in such a way will we be able to reflect this light in our face and our actions.
